LinkedInLinkedIn University Pages    by Sandra Long

Dear College President,

LinkedIn should now be considered a top marketing tool for Higher Education. Colleges and universities can easily connect and engage with current and prospective students, parents, alumni and donors.  LinkedIn just introduced a few compelling new features just for this market. The features with the most impact for higher education are called the University page and Alumni Tool.

With over 230 million accounts, LinkedIn is the professional networking powerhouse application. The growth and potential for LinkedIn is staggering. Bring that networked power to your university for increased visibility and engagement. Let the world know about the special attributes and capabilities of your school and alumni. High school students are now allowed on LinkedIn and are studying the career paths of your alumni. Give a big boost to admissions by your active support and engagement with LinkedIn.

How can this happen? What has changed on LinkedIn?

Universities can now create their own LinkedIn page, similar to a LinkedIn Company page which is for businesses. Your school can easily and regularly share online what makes it special to a large and fast growing LinkedIn population around the world. With your own University page, your school can add text and graphics to describe and market your unique institution to millions. Your school can engage with your key stakeholders by posting relevant content on a regular basis. LinkedIn will also allow you to see and reach your audience with targeted communications.

Want to know what your alumni are doing? LinkedIn insights can answer your questions. Your prospective students will also be looking to LinkedIn for guidance on colleges, career paths and the professional connections between your school and various companies. Your prospective students and parents are already looking for insights from your University page, so you might as well leverage it for the full benefit of your college.

Just how fast can your college or university jump on this professional networking bandwagon known as LinkedIn?  These new features can benefit higher education across the enterprise. LinkedIn is not just for Career Services. Certainly, LinkedIn is the best tool for job seekers, college students and new grads to support them with personal branding and networking. But now, it is so much more.

Your college or university should be creating marketing and engagement goals for your LinkedIn University page. These plans and goals should include university branding, alumni engagement, admissions, career services and recruitment. Never before has your college had the power to communicate so easily to so many professionals worldwide.   How is your school going to use LinkedIn?
